Precautions and Interactions with Other Medications

Always inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs, herbal remedies, and supplements. Azathioprine interacts with many drugs, potentially affecting their efficacy or causing adverse reactions.

Live vaccines are strictly contraindicated. Avoid them during Azathioprine treatment, as it weakens your immune system, increasing the risk of infection.

Allopurinol, used to treat gout, should be used cautiously with Azathioprine. Their combined use significantly increases the risk of serious side effects. Your doctor might adjust the dosage of Azathioprine or recommend an alternative treatment.

Concomitant use with NSAIDs (like ibuprofen or naproxen) may increase the risk of bone marrow suppression. Close monitoring of your blood counts is necessary.

Azathioprine metabolism can be affected by rifampicin (an antibiotic) and phenytoin (an anticonvulsant). Your doctor might need to adjust your Azathioprine dose accordingly.

Drugs that suppress bone marrow function, such as methotrexate, increase the risk of blood disorders when combined with Azathioprine. Regular blood tests are crucial to monitor your blood cell counts.

Alcohol consumption should be limited while on Azathioprine, as it can worsen liver damage. Discuss alcohol consumption limits with your doctor.

Regular blood tests are needed to monitor your complete blood count (CBC), liver function, and kidney function throughout your treatment. Report any unusual symptoms immediately to your physician. These might include fever, fatigue, easy bruising, or unusual bleeding.
