Protecting Yourself from the Sun While on Doxycycline

Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher at least 15 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply every two hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating.

Seek shade during peak sun hours (10 a. m. to 4 p. m.). This simple step significantly reduces your UV exposure.

Wear protective clothing. Think long sleeves, pants, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses that block UVA and UVB rays. Choose tightly woven fabrics for better protection.

Limit your time in direct sunlight. Even with precautions, prolonged sun exposure increases your risk of sunburn. Plan outdoor activities accordingly.

Consider using a sun-protective lip balm with SPF 30 or higher. Your lips are also susceptible to sunburn.

If you experience a sunburn, use cool compresses and consider over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Consult a doctor if the burn is severe or doesn’t improve.

Stay hydrated. Dehydration can worsen sun sensitivity. Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
