Both doxycycline and tetracycline belong to the tetracycline antibiotic family, but they have distinct side effect profiles and contraindications.
Gastrointestinal Issues:
- Doxycycline: More often causes nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea than tetracycline. Tetracycline: Can cause similar gastrointestinal upset, and also esophageal ulceration if not taken with plenty of water and while sitting upright.
Photosensitivity:
Both medications can increase your skin’s sensitivity to sunlight. Use sunscreen and protective clothing, especially during peak sun hours. Doxycycline’s photosensitivity is generally considered less severe than tetracycline’s.
Dental Effects:
Tetracycline is known to stain developing teeth a yellowish-brown color in children and young adults. Doxycycline carries a lower risk of tooth discoloration, but it’s still advisable to avoid it during pregnancy and in young children.
Other Side Effects:
- Doxycycline: May cause yeast infections, headaches, dizziness, and vaginal candidiasis. Tetracycline: In addition to the above, can affect liver function and cause kidney problems in rare instances.
Contraindications:
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Both should be avoided during pregnancy, especially in the last trimester, and while breastfeeding. Children: Tetracycline is contraindicated in children under 8 years due to tooth discoloration risk. Doxycycline use in young children requires careful consideration and should be discussed with a doctor. Kidney and Liver Disease: Both medications should be used cautiously in individuals with pre-existing kidney or liver problems, requiring close monitoring.
Always discuss potential side effects and contraindications with your doctor before starting either doxycycline or tetracycline. They can help assess your individual risk and determine the most appropriate antibiotic for your specific needs. Remember to always follow your doctor’s instructions regarding dosage and administration.
