Understanding Tetracycline Eye Ointment and its Use in Cats

Tetracycline eye ointment treats bacterial eye infections in cats. Always follow your veterinarian’s instructions precisely.

Administering the Ointment

Gently clean the affected eye with a clean, damp cloth before application. Apply a thin ribbon of ointment to the inside lower eyelid. Avoid touching the applicator tip to the eye. Gently close the cat’s eyelid to distribute the ointment. Apply the prescribed amount, typically two to three times daily.

You might observe temporary blurry vision in your cat immediately after application. This is normal and temporary.

Potential Side Effects and Precautions

Some cats experience temporary eye irritation, like redness or mild discomfort. Allergic reactions are rare but possible; discontinue use and contact your vet immediately if you notice swelling or excessive discharge. Tetracycline can stain fabrics, so be mindful when handling your cat after application. Keep the ointment out of reach of children and other pets. Store it as directed on the label, typically in a cool, dry place.

When to Contact Your Veterinarian

Contact your veterinarian if the infection doesn’t improve after a few days of treatment, or if you observe worsening symptoms, such as increased swelling, discharge, or squinting.

Alternative Treatments

Your vet may suggest alternative treatments depending on the specific infection and your cat’s health. These options could include different antibiotics or other therapies.
