First, verify the physician’s order, checking the medication, dose, and route. Confirm patient identity using two identifiers. Next, prepare the IV solution by reconstituting the Decadron powder according to the manufacturer’s instructions, using sterile water or saline. Gently swirl to dissolve; avoid vigorous shaking.
Preparing the Infusion
Select an appropriate IV line, ensuring patency. Use aseptic technique throughout the procedure. Attach the prepared Decadron solution to the IV tubing, ensuring no air bubbles enter the line. Prime the tubing thoroughly, removing all air before connecting it to the patient’s IV access.
Administering the Dose
Check the infusion rate prescribed by the physician. Begin the infusion at the prescribed rate, carefully monitoring the patient for any adverse reactions. Observe the infusion site for signs of infiltration or phlebitis. Document the start time, dose administered, and infusion rate in the patient’s chart. After administration, discard used supplies appropriately according to your institution’s protocols.
Post-Infusion Monitoring
Continue monitoring the patient for at least 30 minutes after completing the infusion. Observe for any immediate reactions such as allergic responses or changes in vital signs. Document any observations in the patient’s chart. Report any unusual findings to the physician immediately. Remember to follow all hospital policies and procedures for medication administration and documentation.
Disposal
Dispose of all used materials according to hospital guidelines. This includes used needles, syringes, and any unused medication.
