Drawing Up the Medication

Always verify the Lasix dose with the physician’s order. Use aseptic technique throughout the procedure.

Gather supplies: Lasix vial, appropriate syringe (size depends on prescribed dose), alcohol swabs, and a sharps container. Inspect the vial: Check the expiration date and solution clarity. Discard if cloudy or discolored. Clean the vial top: Thoroughly swab the rubber stopper with an alcohol swab, allowing it to air dry. Draw air into the syringe: Draw an amount of air into the syringe equal to the prescribed dose of Lasix. Inject air into the vial: Insert the needle into the rubber stopper and inject the air. This creates positive pressure, facilitating withdrawal. Withdraw the medication: Invert the vial, keeping the needle tip submerged in the solution. Slowly pull back on the plunger to draw the correct dose. Check for air bubbles: Gently tap the syringe to dislodge any air bubbles. Expel any remaining air bubbles before administering. Remove needle from vial: Carefully remove the needle from the vial and safely dispose of the vial in a sharps container. Prepare for injection: Select an appropriate injection site. Clean the site with an alcohol swab, allowing it to dry.

Remember to follow your institution’s specific protocols and always consult the medication’s package insert for additional details.

Use appropriate needle gauge and length for intramuscular injection. Administer the injection according to established guidelines. Document the medication administration accurately.
