Identifying Ohio Ginseng

Examine the leaves carefully. Ohio ginseng typically has five leaflets arranged palmately on a single stem. Each leaflet is oblong-lanceolate with a serrated edge. Look for a distinctly pointed tip on each leaflet. The leaves are usually a medium to dark green.

Root Characteristics

The root is the prize! Mature ginseng roots are thick, fleshy, and often have a distinct forked shape resembling a human body. Their color varies from light tan to yellowish-brown. Look for numerous fine, lateral roots branching off the main root. The root’s age can be determined by counting the number of “scars” (marks left by previous year’s stems) at the crown.

Berry Identification

In late summer, mature plants produce clusters of bright red berries. Each berry contains one to three seeds. The presence of these berries confirms that you’ve found ginseng, although it is crucial to be aware that harvesting berries is generally illegal. Look for these as confirmation, but leave the berries intact to ensure future growth.
