Amiloride HCTZ 5/50 mg is a combination medication containing two diuretics: amiloride (5 mg) and hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) (50 mg). It lowers blood pressure by increasing urine output.
Amiloride is a potassium-sparing diuretic. It works by blocking sodium reabsorption in the kidneys, promoting sodium and water excretion. This action, however, preserves potassium levels in the body, unlike many other diuretics.
Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic. It increases urine output by preventing the reabsorption of sodium and chloride in the kidneys. This leads to increased water excretion, thus lowering blood volume and blood pressure.
The combination of amiloride and HCTZ offers synergistic effects. Amiloride counteracts the potassium-wasting effect of HCTZ, reducing the risk of hypokalemia (low potassium levels), a potential side effect of HCTZ alone. This combination provides effective blood pressure control with a reduced risk of electrolyte imbalance.
This medication is prescribed for hypertension (high blood pressure), and possibly edema (fluid retention) associated with congestive heart failure, liver disease, or kidney disease. Always follow your doctor’s instructions for dosage and administration. Consult your doctor immediately if you experience any adverse reactions.
