When to Consult a Doctor: Recognizing Complications

Seek immediate medical attention if your skin infection worsens despite taking dicloxacillin. Increased pain, swelling, redness spreading beyond the initial area, or the appearance of red streaks leading away from the infection are warning signs of a more serious issue. Fever over 101°F (38.3°C) or chills also require immediate evaluation.

Signs of Severe Infection

Pus formation significantly increasing in amount or changing color (becoming greenish or yellowish) indicates a possible spread of infection. Similarly, Lymphadenopathy–swollen lymph nodes near the infected area–needs prompt medical assessment. These could signify a deeper or more widespread bacterial infection requiring stronger antibiotics.

Allergic Reactions

Stop taking dicloxacillin immediately and seek medical help if you experience any allergic reaction. This can manifest as hives, itching, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, or tongue (angioedema), or dizziness. These are serious and potentially life-threatening reactions that necessitate urgent medical care.
